ผมได้ทดสอบ Audinst MX-1 เองกับมือเนื่องจากความสงสัยมากล้น ว่าทำไม มี คนมากมายสนใจและยอมรับใน dac/amp ตัวนี้ในระดับหนึ่งเลย
Audinst เป็นยี่ห้อ เกาหลี หน้าใหม่สู่วงการ Head-fi แต่ได้รับการยอมรับมากถึงกับ หลายสถาบันเลยทีเดียว

รูปลักษณ์ของ แอมป์ตัวนี้ดูเรียบง่าย ไม่ฉูดฉาดเกินตัว แต่มีขนาดที่ เล็กพอใช้ได้ 10cm*10cm*3cm โดยประมาณ

เสียง...
ความประทับใจแรกของเสียงเลย ที่ได้รับคือ ลองเล่นกับคอมพ์ ที่ ทำงานโดยมีเพียง Triple fi 10ที่ติดตัวอยู่ กับไอพอด
จึงได้เสียบไอพอด กับคอมที่ทำงานเพื่อเล่นเพลงบนเครื่องผ่านคอม
ก่อนอื่นผมต้องขอบอกก่อนว่าส่วนตัว ใช้ Triple fi มาสอง เดือน แอบไม่ประทับใจกับการสวมใส่และ เรื่องของเสียงที่ ดูอึดอัดเลกน้อย เพราะผมใส่ comply foam tips และมันไม่เข้าที่สักที แต่เนื่องจากความที่มันพกพาง่ายและ พยายาม burn-in ไปด้วยในการฟังเพลงแต่ละวัน

เมื่อเสียบหูฟังเข้าไปสู่ ตัว mx-1 สิ่งแรกที่รู้สึกคือ รู้สึก เหมือนใส่หูฟังไม่แน่ คือ แบบ เสียงดูคว้างขึ้นแบบ งงๆ จากปรกติ และดูมีระเบียบขึ้นในเสียง และ เบสดุกระชับขึ้นอย่างพอควร ซึ่งตรงที่รู้สึกว่าใส่ไม่แน่น นี่เพราะ ว่า soundstage มันกว้างขึ้น นี่เองเพิ่งนึกออกภายหลัง

และพอกลับมาบ้านได้ทดลอง กับ Ath-M50, Westone 3 และ Ath-Esw9 ด้วยแล้วทุกตัวล้วน สแดงให้เห้นว่าเสียงดีขึ้น ในโทนเดียวกัน ทุกตัว คือ Soundstage กว้างขึ้น mid, treble ชัดเจนขึ้น และ bass ดูแน่นขึ้น

แต่ผมว่าทุกคนมักมีหูของตัวเอง จึงอยากแนะนำให้มาลองด้วยตัวเองครับ จะยกแลปทอป มาเอง หรือ หูฟังยังไงได้

COMPARISONS
Although the MX1 shares the same DAC as the Fiio E17 it's not much of a threat to the sound quality of the Audinst. Unlike the E17, the MX1 has no battery and no ability to use the amplifier on it's own at all. This is a bit of a shame considering it can be powered by a 15v adaptor, but at this price you can't complain too much with such an impressive sound quality. I preferred the bass presentation of the MX1, being less plump and noticeably better textured. The midrange and soundstage were also a big improvement for me over the Fiio E17. I've made the Fiio sound poor now and that's unfair because it's not. It's just that the Audinst feels not only better, but better value, even compared to the brilliant little Fiio. Of course some of the Fiio's desirability will come down to features but purely on audio quality alone the MX1 wins for me.

Compared to the HRT Headstreamer some of the audio quality felt close, but in general the Audinst is just too good. Again not only did the MX1 feel better value, but it's sound quality just felt better overall, despite being cheaper. The MX1's bass presentation was less bloated, the detail and soundstage was a touch nicer but mostly the midrange was more forward without being overly so. Feature wise the HRT loses here too. It has no power options, no alternative analogue or digital output, no large headphone connection (6.35mm), no physical volume control and the front USB port felt rather awkward by comparison (really should be on the back). I'm afraid that the American Headstreamer, as capable as it is, is rather crushed by the sheer value, impressive features and sound quality of this Korean monster

At the end of the day, I think the HUD-MX1 is an excellent product. It’s not an excellent product in the sense that it can compete with $1000 DACs for the price, but more that it’s a well thought, well designed stand alone DAC at a very competitive price. The free from any coloration sound makes it an easy pair with a separate headphone amplifier.

CONCLUSION

One aspect of the Audinst that I have not completely touched upon is the versatility. What we have here is an excellent DAC paired with a pretty good headphone amp. You could start with the mx1 by itself, eventually upgrade to a nicer stand alone headphone amp, and then eventually even upgrade to a high end DAC while still seeing use from the mx1 as a USB to SPDIF converter. This product can last in your system throughout several upgrades and I think that makes it very useful.

Yet another cool thing is the fact that it will pass through Dolby Digital and DTS signals from the optical output. I connected my laptop to my living room setup and played a few movies on DVD, and this function performed as promised. I got the surround signal on my AVR without any fussing around. I don’t currently have a Blu-Ray drive in my laptop so I was unable to test the performance with Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. But as far as I understand it, all Blu-Ray discs have some form of backwards compatibility; the lossless DTS track has an imbedded “core” track that should act like standard DTS, and discs with TrueHD tracks are required to have a standard Dolby Digital track as well. I’ve verified this as an early adopter of the format with my early generation Samsung player, and it seems to work well. After all this rambling, what I’m pointing out is that the Audinst HUD-mx1 would serve very well in a home theater PC setup. I used to have an HTPC and back in the day it was not this easy to extract good sound from the box.

If we set aside the extreme versatility of the mx1 and judge it strictly by its sound, it still comes out as a big winner. I don’t want to pretend that it is a giant killer, as I do have some better DACs and some better headphone amps too. But if I had to guess a price for this thing I would have thought perhaps $400 or maybe even more. The fact that it provides you with excellent transparent sound which is suitable for any headphone makes it very appealing, and the versatility is icing on the cake.

The Audinst HUD-mx1 at about $175 is indeed a great value for its function: a portable external DAC and headphone amp ideal for use with a laptop when traveling. I actually have been using it with a desk top iMac, though. Phones are Audeze LCD-2 and VSonic 07 IEM's. The Audinst headphone output, using USB as power source for the mx1, is plenty adequate to drive either phones to uncomfortable levels. The sound is quite detailed and accurate. Soundstage is very nice if not the very best, but again, for the price it's hard to beat. There are no disappointments in presentation of bass, midrange, and treble in any music I've listened to, including jazz, blues, orchestral, female and male vocals, light rock, heavy rock, etc. There are some better sounding alternatives if your budget allows, but for the price point and portability and versatility, I agree 100% with Project86 that this is a great buy.
