I enjoyed the closed and open-back versions. It's important for me to point out that all Audeze EL-8s at CES were pre-production units (I'll get into that soon). Nonetheless, I thought the closed-backs had a terrific midrange: textural and colorful, plus the detail retrieval was very impressive. The highs were extended, though slightly veiled at-times (which I'm sure they'll address before officially introducing the cans). The bass was tight and controlled. And while I enjoyed both versions – the open-backs had an obvious advantage when it came to throwing a soundstage. The musical image was wider and more opaque, and this also seemed to enhance their dimensionality – which was wonderful. Overall I thought the EL-8 delivered, and my expectations were unreasonably high.
We wanted to check out the Audeze EL-8 and Chord Hugo combo! I brought my Astell&Kern AK240 for reference there as well. Michael and I thoroughly enjoyed the pairing of the EL-8 and Hugo. I ended up picking Stevie Wonders Talking Book in 192/24-bit for that listening sesh. The tracks I focused on were two of my favorites: "Big Brother" and "Superstition". I love the imaging in "Big Brother". The recording sounds so intimate, with the instrumentation spread-out, and Stevie's vocals hovering in the center, sometimes just just-left of center. This track also stirs wonderful memories for me: sitting with my older cousin Kenny listening to this record on his turntable when I was a kid. "Superstition": Well, C'mon, how could I not play that song when rockin' Talking Book? The Chord Hugo – Audeze EL-8 combo (plus my AK240) handled all the tracks on the record with precision, without sounding too linear. The sound was electrifying and so silky-smooth.

Being a big Audeze fan (as many of you no doubt know already) - believe me when I say that my expectations are perhaps unreasonably high, and I'm just gonna shoot from the hip as I ALWAYS DO: Un-filtered. Good or bad:
That said - having worn them for at least 3 LPs thus far:
The EL-8 (open-back) are comfy as hell!
I love the feeling of these on my head, and I'll let you know if this continues...
Clamping force is not an issue (which was - a small issue for me w/ the LCD-series - though the non-leather/vegan headband took care of that for me - we call it that as a JOKE - before the dopes start makin' fun of that) - neither is the weight. It felt this way upon first listen, but I wanted to wait a BIT before saying that - and again, I'll let you know if this continues...
They've literally been here for 3 hours - so WAY early for even Early Impressions, IMHO - but, just to share what I'm feeling right now: My AK240 as source:
These impressions were all written WHILE listening to the music listed...
Listening to: "Riant" - Recondite - Hinterland
The hovering synths are airy, and the speed of transient attack is WICKEDLY fast.
The mids - vibrant (colorful - NOT-colored) with a nice flow, solid presence, and definitely engaging.
The bass, from what I remember - has been totally re-tuned/re-shaped/re-whatever!!
The bass (sub-bass and bass) is extended, punchy, perhaps a BIT too warm/too silky for me (and I LOVE warmth) - but, as with past Audezes - this tends to tighten-up with break-in - so lets see...
Listening to "Turn Away" - Beck - Morning Phase (96k/24-bit):
A quick note: Seen Beck a bunch of times - big venues, to SONOS Studios (very intimate):
His vocals are clearly and coherently rendered - actually the realism is striking at the moment. It's very revealing, the effect he often employs - the double-up and reverb. Trails off beautifully and STOPS. NO over-hang there.
The guitar work has wonderful space around it, and the plucks of the strings are also wonderfully realistic. They're not bloated or exaggerated, as I find with many systems when playing this song.
The overall imaging is different from past-models, and I need a little time to put my finger on explaining the difference - as its subtle, but noticeable...
The midrange, bottom-end, and highs are insanely balanced throughout this track! THAT'S what I thought reminded me of the LCD-X (its not so linear that its flat and boring - rather its my trusty monitoring system when I'm engineering).
That's what I got so far as it's VERY soon. Also: There's NOTHING cheap about these cans. The headband and chassis is top-notch - and the wood-grain accent may not come through in pix well, but I like it. I would, however, LOVE an all-black version too!
Back to listening - Woo Audio WA7 next, and then off to the Sonic Satori Personal Audio Lab for some of my bigger reference stuff...

It's like hearing this track on my high-end two-channel system!

More EARLY IMPRESSIONS:
Using the system from earlier:
MacBook Pro/Amarra Symphony as source
Mytek Stereo-DSD DAC (just the name, it does PCM too)
Woo Audio WA7 Fireflies + upgraded tubes
ALL wired w/ Black Cat Cables - LectraLine interconnects / Silverstar USB (NOT-crazy expensive cables BTW)
Listening to "A Song For You" - Donny Hathaway - Donny Hathaway (his 1st record, Rhino Re-Master)
Impressions also written while listening to the song:
This is one of my all-time TOP sonic acid tests. My former mentor/boss producer & arranger Arif Mardin produced this album, and wrote all the string and horn arrangements. I spent many hours listening to the tape masters of this album with Arif at Atlantic Studios - as I LOVE it - and he really loved Donny Hathaway (they were working on another album when he jumped out the hotel window and killed himself - what a tragedy). So I know this track/song as well as you can know a track. This song is also one of the very few that can bring me to tears over and over again. It's heavy, and magnificent.
This is an older recording (recorded in 1970 - released in 1971) so there is some noticeable tape-hiss that lingers, though its not too loud, and once his piano and vocal kick in, I lose myself in the music. But I wanted to share that in case any of you check the record out (which I HIGHLY recommend).
This is Hathaway's rendition of some of Leon Russell's greatest, most-intimate song-writing, IMHO. The song begins with Hathaway striking the piano, and playing it from one end to the other (obviously changing octaves as he plays), with a slow pace - then faster as he progresses. The sound moves from left-to-right, seemingly floating across the soundstage. The sound of the keys is rich and full-bodied, with powerful and clear reproduction of Hathaway's key fingering. He really digs into the keys as he plays, especially during this song, as the lyrics are heavy, and he seems like he's in the zone. There's a ton of air in this recording, but
When Hathaway's vocals begin, once again I'm taken aback. I know this is ALL subjective - but I can't think of another headphone, actually from 699-900 bucks that captures and reproduces such palpable, realistic vocals. It's like hearing this track on my high-end two-channel system! He's right there, placed in the center of the stereo image, with the piano under him. One of the reasons I love this recording so much is the spectacular sense of spaciousness, as mentioned earlier here. I found out this song was recorded in a pretty large rehearsal studio - intended for orchestras. They wanted this not just to capture the strings and horns more naturally - they thought everything might sound more natural during playback if they recorded it all there - his voice, etc. - and I think they were geniuses for doing this! This is also an instant test of your systems ability to create believable and dimensional depths of field. This system, w/ the EL-8s, did a tremendous job of rendering this magnificent sense of space, setting up the meat of the song: Hathaway's emotively charged lyrical delivery and the effectiveness of the instrumental compositions minimalism - how Mardin also used space, the space between the notes in the arrangements, as part of the musical framework here. The mixture of Hathaway's glowering honesty and the wipe-openness of the instrumentals makes for an incredible sense of intimacy WHEN listening on a resolving, dynamic stereo system.
The EL-8s pulled this off in, wholeheartedly, an unexpectedly (YES, from earlier in the listening sesh I thought the EL-8s staging - while wide, might not be up to task on this particular recording) ease. It didn't sound too forced/aggressive or laid-back, the EL-8s pulled me into that space. They're doing it right now. The strings are also transparent and vividly colored, NOT colored in the sense that their timbre is skewed or artificial-sounding - rather it's colorful: The timbre is natural and pictorial. Overall the frequency spectrum was splendidly rendered from top to bottom here. But, honestly, while that's awesome, it doesn't speak to the, well, for lack of a better recognizable term: The "sparkle", or the thing that's intanglible and pretty damn hard to describe: The soul of the music and sound. The sound of Hathaways' vulnerability was as intense as I need it to be. And: Again (sorry to sound like a broken-record - stil goin' tonight!!!!) this was unexpected - How well they handled this recording.
What impressed me here more than anything I can offer in audio terms, is that intangible thing about music - whether live or on a sick high-fidelity sound system! When I'm listening... (starting track over and listening RIGHT NOW): I'm not thinking about all that audiophile jazz. I know -
Some will undoubtedly call this useless poetic banter, or meaningless prose. But, I promised I was gonna shoot from the hip here: NO Filters. Well, I connected to the music in a way that's, honestly, reserved for some of my top reference cans (LCDs, HD800, Prime, Audio-Technica ATH-900X, OG Stax). And, at the moment, the best way (I think) to explain that is to say with those cans (and my desktop reference amps) I have listening experiences that are similar, and therefore remind me of listening to my bigger in-room stereo. It's just as immersive and encircling. Though I know sound waves aren't making physical contact with my body except my ears, my mind stops (thank God, some respite from my own-mania) and I'm whole-heartedly lost in the music - like a meditative experience. While I love my portable rigs, and I can have magical moments with them - it's different. SO - it's good to hear a pair of cans in this price range do things I've reserved for some of the most expensive! Excluding the sonic gems we find at reasonable prices - which are still rare finds.
And I have no reason to lie to you anyway. As much as I love Audeze, I also gotta work my A__ off to earn these cans if I choose to keep any of em! Sure, I get accommodated as a writer/reviewer - but believe me I gotta work just as hard as you all to own em! So I know ITS STILL EARLY - but, as I said before (or, if not, in a Tweet recently) the EL-8 open-backs are, thus far, worthy of the Audeze name.
I'm not implying that I think the EL-8s are lacking something. I just didn't expect them, at 699 bucks, to do what they did with this amazing song! Now I GOTTA use em with my E.A.R HP4 tonight! That'll be the last thing before I CRASH. Sure, that tube amp is freakin' expensive. The match, money-wise, makes no sense. I don't give a s__. I gotta hear these hooked up to that thing before I close my eyes!
The bass is still a lil' thick, and I LUV BASS, but it's already changed slightly, losing that overly-silky/warm sonic trait I heard before I ran the Nordost and Ayre System discs (they both have "burn-in" tracks w/ all sorts of differing sweeps for different amounts of time). Plus: I pink-noised em for a few hours while I was running errands for Alexandra. This could all be psycho-acoustic, but hey I'll be listening to em tomorrow as well - keepin' notes.

Drivers are warranted everywhere in the world for 3 years. (If you plug them into a wall socket, go scuba diving with them or go mad scientist on them, they won’t be covered!)
We’ll evaluate the drivers and proceed on a case-by-case basis.
If you live outside the USA and you purchased Audeze headphones from one of our local dealers/distributors you can send them to your country’s authorized Audeze distributor for service.
If you purchased your headphones directly from Audeze you can obtain warranty service from Audeze USA but not your local dealer/distributor.
The prices for driver replacements have been revised.
The LCD-3 is $375, the LCD-X/XC is $325, and the LCD-2 is now $250
It's worth pointing out that one of the reasons for the greater cost of driver replacement is that Audeze replaces both drivers even if only one is defective. We do that so both are matched for best performance. We don’t know of any other manufacturer that goes to these lengths to be certain you have the best product possible.

@mikemercer I had listen to LCD2-2 some time ago, it's a good phones and good tonal balance. Anyhow, it just lag of some fun factor, and its mid is too lean for my taste. Do you think that EL8 has more colored mid and treble.
I already pre-order EL8 close version, but still curious whether this is my good decision for blind buy or not.

If you found the LCD-2.2 was "lag of some fun factor, and its mid is too lean" then you've made a GREAT choice, IMHO!!
To my ears, the EL-8s have a more vivid midrange than the original LCD-2 - NOT to say the original LCD-2 didn't have solid mids - but the EL-8s are more reminiscent, for me, of the new LCD-2 w/ Fazor (makes sense - as the EL-8s employ two new technologies, including Fazor). The treble was also greatly-improved (again, IMHO) in the new LCD-2 w/ Fazor - and the EL-8s have wonderful sparkle to the highs and extension - not to mention a wider, heightened, more-holographic audible image in the upper frequencies than the original LCD-2s...
I think you're Golden w/ your choice!

Last night, Februrary 28th, there was a break-in and robbery at Audeze. About $250,000 of headphones were stolen. We're a relatively small company and this is a real blow. Audeze asks everyone to let us know if offered LCD headphones at a deal that’s too good to be true. You should be highly suspicious if anyone other than an Authorized Audeze dealer offers you our headphones for sale at a reduced price. We don't allow our dealers to sell via Amazon, eBay, Craigslist etc., so deals on these sites should be carefully researched before purchase. You should also be very concerned if their headphones do not have a serial number, or the seller refuses to give you the serial number before purchase. All Audeze headphones have a serial number on the inside of the adjusting block. We'll soon publish a list of all stolen products’ serial numbers. In addition, Audeze is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves. If you have any information or questions, please write to: [email protected]. While it does not appear any EL-8s were stolen (they were in a different area of our warehouse), due to the police investigation and general disruption, you should expect a few days’ delay in EL-8 shipments.
Thanks, The Audeze Team
1. close: Amazing. Such depth they sound very precise without sounding synthetic. The bass is very punchy without sounding muddy. Mids and treble sound clean and precise. Listened to Lana del Ray's Ultraviolence as well as Daft Punk's Alive and Homework. I was definitive most impressed with the clarity and precision of Daft Punk's albums.
2. open: Such a more realistic top end and depth is really good, Going to be hard to get anywork done today. I am listening for pleasure right now and not delving into my test tracks, Just enjoying the experience right now. What's amazing is the top end on this album which bothered me through my jh16's is so much more complex with the EL-8 and enjoyable. The depth of detail is blowing my mind right now.
3. close: Fresh out of the box, I am really enjoying the closed backs... I'm surprised they sound as good as they do with zero break-in... if they are this good now, they should be great with a bit more break-in...The audeze sonic signature is there with the closed back. Plenty of rich bass like you would expect... they seem very clean sounding and more neutral than the other models in the line-up. nothing is jumping out at me as irritating or obvious

I would say already that this will be close to an XC killer. Lighter weight and less than half the cost with at least 90+% the sound if not more.
