LS3/5As are small monitors, measuring only about 12” tall x 7.5” wide x 6.5” deep, and weighing about 12 lbs each. They are two-way sealed-box speakers featuring a small (0.75”) mylar dome tweeter and a 4.5” bextrene cone woofer, sourced from KEF. Frequency response is rated at 80hz to 20,000 hz +/- 3 db, and sensitivity is rated at a relatively low 82 db. Impedance of the earlier versions (like the one reviewed here) is rated at 15 ohms. All LS3/5As I’ve seen have been finished in real wood veneer; I believe the ones I had here were walnut. The LS3/5A was introduced in 1977 as is still made today. Cost in the late ‘70s was just under $500 for a new pair, increasing gradually to about $1000 per pair by 1993, and $1700 per pair by 2007. Today, a vintage pair in nice shape still commands anywhere from $1000 to more than $2000 on eBay or Audiogon. I am told that some of the more rare early versions (Chartwell, for example) can occasionally command more than $3000 in today’s market.
