I wouldn&squot;t assume that the HDR-40 and the HD-40 are the same. I&squot;m not familiar with the HDR-40, but the HD-40 is one of my all-time favorite headphones...because it is one of the all-time "bang for the buck" products. EXTREMELY smooth response, though more forward sounding than today&squot;s HD-580 and HD-600 (a plus for people who find these more expensive models to be "too laid back"). The HD-40 had VERY extended bass response (exceedingly rare in Sennheiser&squot;s Supra-Aural (on the ear) lightweight &squot;phones. And it was CHEAP...about 40 US dollars street price. I really believe that Sennheiser quit making the HD-40 because it was truly a "giant killer", making it seem silly to spend more for their (and others) more expensive models.
So what was wrong with &squot;em? The HD-40 was a high impedance &squot;phone which was difficult to drive (although shortly before it was discontinued, a low-impedance version was introduced). The cord wasn&squot;t easily removable/replacable as on more modern Sennheisers. And the bright yellow earpads became dingy looking after a couple of months, and needed replacing after a year or two of heavy use. That&squot;s about it. Otherwise, they were pretty much faultless (in my opinion).
As for how they compared to the MDR-V6, the HD-40 was probably more "V6-like" than any &squot;phones Sennheiser has ever made. As noted above, though smooth, the HD-40 definitely erred on the "forward/detailed/in your face" side of neutrality. I honestly would have no preference for the sound of the HD-40 or the V6. Given a choice between the two of them, I would probably opt for the HD-40 because it IS a good deal lighter and more comfortable, and sacrifices nothing (in terms of sound quality or bass extension) to achieve this. But beware, though the HD-40 is small, lightweight, and (in relative terms) portable, you ain&squot;t gonna&squot; be able to satisfactorily drive it direct from your cd/md/mp3/fm portable. You DEFINITELY need at least a Total Airhead to get the most out of it. So if the ability to travel minus the extra bulk and complexity of an amp is important, the decision is easy. Buy the V6.
However, I&squot;m not convinced that you have even found an HD-40. MAKE SURE! And if you have, enjoy my friend! You have found an audio classic that&squot;s still better than the vast majority of what&squot;s available now!
